Ti Rivyè Water Project
March 2008
Background and Project Objectives.
Fondwa is the tenth communal sector within the city of LEOGAN; water is one of the relevant problems of this region, if we take into account that until now , there are no water sources sufficiently rich to satisfie the necessities of the 7000 residents, living within this region. There are no aqueducts, and water is drawn directly from nearby springs.
Fondwa is a traditionally agricultural region, yet it does not utilize irrigation to benefit crops, it has been estimated that the annual rainfall is 1600 mm; the main crops are: Yam, cassava, bananas, pumpkins, and fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, and mammey.
At a meeting held with farmers from the area, it was known that each had to wakeup very early in the morning (3:00am) to fetch water and in many instances to very distant places. Likewise it was known that the water consumption per (capita) was 30 liters/day/person.
The Fondwa region is characterized for having certain quantity of Springs scattered around the area, with permanent Springs that do not exeed 0.20 Liters per second, except for TIRIVYE which can supply a little over 30 liters/second.
|
In order to supply the necessities of water of the 8000 habitants of the region and its floating population, it will require a source of at least 10 Liters/Second, until now the only source of supply with real possibilities is the Spring of TIRIVYE. This Spring can resolve the problem of water in Fondwa, but it is a costly project, due to the un-eveness of the terrain, were water has to travel on-to higher ground, with measurments of 150 meters & 1500 meters of longitud.
