The presence of international volunteers in Fondwa

In the last ten years, we might have 50 international volunteers staying and working in Fondwa for six months, one year, two or three years.  Among them we have non-believers and Christians (Catholic and Protestants).  Some of them are from organizations and some others volunteers who came on their own.  Some others came to attend our  tourism education program for five days and later they chose to come to volunteer in Fondwa for one or two years.  Among the volunteers we have married couples who have come to work as a couple and on the other hand we have a few single people who have met their mate in Fondwa and got married later.  For example, we have a Canadian woman who has met an American man in Fondwa and they got married.   We have a French volunteer who has met an American woman in Fondwa and they, also, got married.  The later couple did not speak a common language, so Creole became their main language for communication.  Also, we have also single people who volunteer and meet Haitians and get married.  Most of the volunteers are very young, early 20’s and either are college graduates or undergraduates.

Some of them are from churches in the United States and Canada.  Some of the volunteers are from organizations like VICS in Canada, SCD & CEIPL in France, FHM in the United States and there are Cuban volunteers from Liliana Institute and the University of Guantanimo.

Our newest volunteer is 78 years old and is a Spiritian Priest (Holy Ghost) from the western province who has chosen to retire in the Fondwa community.  With his presence we envision to start with an international retirement club in Fondwa.

Besides all of the good work the volunteers have done is the benefit for all to pray together and celebrate the Eucharist.  There are times we are having groups of Jewish, Muslim, Pentecostal, Methodist, Lutherans and Catholics celebrating the Eucharist together because of the works we are doing together with the poor.
