Report on the damage of the Hurricanes Hanna and Ike in Fondwa on September 12 2008

After the passage of the storms Hanna and Ike, if somebody goes to Fondwa, he could believe that there have not been too many damages in the Fondwa village, because it was not flooded.

It is true that Fondwa is not a zone at the risk of floods, because it is located in the heights, between 500 to 900 meters of altitudes. However, it’s still vulnerable to the natural disasters regarding the risks of erosion and landslide related on strong slopes and the type of ground. The other factors that return Fondwa a vulnerable zone relate to its position. Fondwa is located at the top of a mountain, and it is not protected. When there are similar storms or hurricanes, the strong winds fall down on the village and cause terrible damages, such as: The trees that are uprooted, the houses that are destroyed, and many other damages.

The damages recorded after the passage of the two storms, are numerous. In addition to the peasants’ plantations that were destroyed by the strong winds, water and landslide, we recorded also many cases of animal lost.

Many trees were uprooted (cabbage tree, coconut, and other forest fruits species). The winds broke many branches of trees that in their turn caused many damages.

The winds swept out the roofs of some houses or broke a part of others. Many overland beaten roads are damaged by the gullies that overflowed.

This small report does not give too many details. However, you will have a better clear idea of the situation of the Fondwa village and the level of the recorded damages.

We recorded approximately 8 landslides in different places. On the road that leads to Fondwa, there are 2 landslides in two various points. These landslides are preventing people and vehicles from circulating. We remind to you that it is a concrete road of 6 meters that rejoins 2 communal sections (10th Fondwa and 9th Citronier) with the trunk road # 2 linking 4 other communal sections.

Until now, the grounds block a part of this road. It is urgent to have tractors, shovels and trucks to remove the grounds from the road.

In the locality of Libète in addition to the landslides, the wells and potable water linked to the peasants home that were useful to them are now filled with sands. In the locality of Visyè there are two landslides. In the locality of Cormier, there was one landslide which has blocked the road of l’amitié. Since this landslide prevented the cars from going to Jacmel, The responsible bent over backward to free the road in a very short time. We wrote this report in order to also have your attention on the road of Fondwa.

In the locality of Anba Tonèl, the slips have carried out the peasants’ pea and banana gardens. In the locality of Falèz, waters have damaged the roads.

We can not really estimate the quantity of gardens that were destroyed by the two storms. However, the fact remains that the peasants have spent all their substances and their energy to have their gardens planted. They were on the way to reap their seeds, but the storms broke through and left them with no hopes.
